Orgo Odyssey

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have the Odyssey, I am on chapter 14 now and I feel like it hasn't been too bad so far. A few tricks here and there but if the Ochem on the real thing is supposed to be easier, then I don't think I should be too worried. How do you feel about it so far?

Yea, I feel the same way. I Think its great prep material. If we know it stone cold, there's seriously no reason why we can't get like 24+. What are you doing for the problems you get wrong?

I hope thats the case, I feel like the later chapters 12-20 are getting pretty difficult but I just try and work through them and whatever I get wrong, I either look up online or pull out my old textbook. how about yourself?

Im just starting chapter 5. I just write down the numbers I get wrong and focus on the concept and why I got it wrong. I also refer to notes. I think its pretty funny how the two of us are the only ones talking on this thread.

I have taken the DAT and got a 23 o chem. IMO if you have time go ahead and have fun with odyssey; but, I think your time can be better spent in other sections (QR, BIO).

To me the most useful resources were: Chad>Destroyer>ACS study guide.

No use studying those diazo salts if they have .0000001% chance of showing up. The test was SO basic.

But, if you have the time knock yourself out. You will pick up some good stuff along the way.

How basic are we talking? because I am finding it useful as my only source of studying Orgo but I am using destroyer and chads as well for gchem bio etc.

The ochem section of the destroyer will suffice. If you're short on time, do the destroyer.

Should we study Spectroscopy? how likely is it and how in depth would it be on the real test?

not a lot but I did encounter a good number of NMR and lab technique questions, so I believe it is always good to prepare every aspect of the test that "might" show up

Yes Yes Yes Yes. Don't shoot yourself in the foot by skipping this section up. Spectroscopy is a very common DAT topic. I had 2 questions; one IR one HNMR. Both very easy if you know the basics and the important shifts, stretches etc. I've read about 1000 breakdowns and I can tell you my case was not exceptional. One poster claimed he had 3 spectroscopy questions and he guessed on all of em bc he didn't study that section. And if you know anything about scoring you can kiss a monster score goodbye if you miss that many easy ones. That's my opinion for what it's worth.

Does anyone have the Organic Chemistry Odyssey? I started it last week and wanted to see what other people who have it think.

Odyssey is awesome if you are more than a couple years removed from Ochem. That book never gets as much praise as it deserves on SDN. It really helps you get back into the groove if you are rusty. For DAT purposes it's overkill. If you know Odyssey cold, I can't see the DAT throwing anything at you that you haven't seen before but it's time consuming (as you are probably finding out). If Ochem is your weakspot then you may as well push through, but I would forgo it if your proficient already.

The other thing you may consider is using it for extra practice in any area of Ochem that you are lacking in. For example, if you frequently miss questions on stereochemistry, then you can just hit up the chapter in Odyssey in knock out 30-40 problems until you are an expert. Good Luck!

So,,,what chapters from the Odyssey book are helpful for DAT??
Should I do Destroyer problems before doing Odyssey problems??

For the organic chemistry section, usually it is not that in depth. I finished organic this year, and scored really well on the practice exams.
