I'm on the east coast, but I cringe everytime I hear it pronounced as "orgo".

Ditto. UCSB- you should add a poll to this thread.

Yea i know some people that say orgo, and i think that sounds super weird. Everyone at my school just says organic. Yea..we rock!

First time I ever heard of "orgo" was on SDN. How do you get "orgo" from "organic," I have no idea.

for any ENG's or math ppl, there's a similar thing i've seen with Differential Equations. DIFF-E.Q. vs. O.D.E. (ordinary differental equations). anyone heard this?

I think it stems from some peoples' lack of opportunity to experiment with other orga__ derivatives. :meanie:

Differential Equations is a general term. ODE's are DE's with only one independent variable. I still have nightmares from Diff. Eq. 🙁

I just say "organic" here in the midwest, but I don't even really care anymore since I just took the final yesterday and never ever have to think about it again. Since 30% should set the curve for a C in our class, I feel fairly confident being in the high 60s.

Yeah, we just say organic.

I'm an engineering student...
At my school, both the ENG and math ppl call it O.D.E.
The only time I heard it called DIFF-E.Q. was from a transfer student.

I think its more of a school to school thing rather than math vs. engineering

People at Duke call it orgo

I've heard both at GT. I like to say orgasmic, but I dunno, that's just me.

In my head I call it "organic 'sex' chemistry", but just organic aloud.

At my old school, engineers called it "diffies" and math/science called it D.E.

Hearing o-chem annoys me a lot.

In the south I hear orgo, o-chem, and plain old organic.

Yeah. I always say "organic." I don't like it when people say "o-chem" or "orgo." 👎

We should have some kinda poll on this.

It's definitely more fun if you look at those reactions that way. 😎

Backside attack?

When you take P-chem, you'll start calling organic chemistry 'O-chem'. It's not an East- vs West-coast thing; it's just about who's had the more challenging course of study.

:meanie: :meanie: :meanie: 😉

PS - J/K on the elitism.

LOL. I'll never forget the day one of our ochem profs (the young blonde one) took off her shirt to reveal one underneath that read "Warning: I have a low activation energy." It was during the thermodynamics section, and it made for a good lecture...

i agree! if they shorten "organic" it should might as well be "orgie"... or better, "orgy." 😛

i'm from the west coast and everyone says "ochem" at my school.

We usually refer to it as "that class that ruined my GPA" or just organic.

Orgo.

And then you can call it "whorgo" when you're in a bad mood.

I'll never forget the day my old, hobbit like organic chem. professor made a joke about backside attack. That was really out of character for him and weird for us.

east coast west coast? I go to penn state, like the largest freaking school in the country, and everyone here calls it ochem, orgo makes no sense....but i dont see how its an east coast west coast thing?

Which is larger, Penn State or Ohio State?

 I had the same experience in my class as well. And we call it o-chem. I didn't hear orgo until MCATs

actually I don't know, I don't even know where Penn State falls but it has to be up there

I knew Ohio State is freaking huge, and I think at one time I was told something in the neighborhood of 60k (don't quote me for accuracy, it's just a number I was told). Naturally, when I saw a comment that Penn State was largest in the country, I got curious.

but in college football rankings, tailgating, and partying it goes

Penn State>>>>>>>>>>>>>everyone else

You're funny if you think any college above the Mason-Dixon is the best at that.

PSU was voted #1 tailgating school in the coutry by ESPN this fall 😉

Edit: Sports Illustrated or ESPN, I forget which one

So, since we're discussing how chem classes are shortened, how do most people refer to analytical chemistry? Here, its 50/50 Anal vs. A-chem

A combination of both for me: Anal Chem. As in "Time to take my Anal Chem test guys."

Focus: Everyone from my school says Orgo. What's an O-Chem? 😛

At my undergrad in FL, we said Organic...I never heard people call it "orgo."

You obviously have never ventured below the Mason-Dixon. Until you see the atmosphere that completely engulfs a city like what happens at many of the SEC stadiums, you don't understand how huge college football is on life in the south. In the South, there are 2 seasons, football season and off-season. 3 if you include signing day in there.

Believe me, when I went to Knoxville last year to watch my school (UAB) take on UT, it was like being in another world.

First..Beaver stadium holds over 110,000 people. It's the second largest stadium in the nation only second to Michigan(because the repainted the seats to cram more people in...i was there this year its horrible).

Second, State College becomes the third largest city in Pa (only next to Philly and Pittsburgh) on Penn State game days......so yea, I kinda know what its like to be engulfed in game day atmosphere.

And finally, I was at the Orange bowl this year to see PSU/FSU, so yes, I have seen college football in the south. Do you know what I saw? This is not an exaggeration..... at least 50 Penn State fans for every one Florida State fan........in THEIR STATE

FSU isn't in the south. It's in Florida*. Southern football = SEC, not ACC

(*U of Florida earns a partial exemption b/c they at least belong to the right conference)

But anyways, college football in South Bend beats all else.

You PSU fans are welcome to come and watch blockhead Morelli get demolished in the fall. The way your OL is shaping up, his IQ might drop from a 75 to a 70 by the game's end.

What's bigger in the south, College Football or NASCAR?

hahaha i love it, I can't wait for that game.....oh and yea I will be there and the way it sounds around here, you guys might be outnumbered in your own home town (outside the stadium of course)

ND needs to get over themselves and join the big ten so we can woop ur a** every year

all time series is 8-8-1 !!

College Football. Nascar is just something to do in the offseason.

Seriously, I'm not exaggerating when I say there's 2 seasons in the south, football season and the offseason.

I went to undergrad in Florida and we always called it organic. I never understood orgo either...ochem I guess is a little bit better. 😛
