Hey all new path residents, did you get info about orientation and employment from your programs yet? Haven't gotten anything from my program except for an initial 'Welcome aboard' phone call. Should I have some sort of official looking papers by now?

Thanks

Besides the welcome letter and the packet of paperwork, I've gotten diddly squat. No contract yet either. Maybe we'll get more info at the end of the month or beginning of May.

I haven't gotten anything either. I've been stalking the mailman :meanie: .

I got a piece of mail from Brigham today. It was my health, TB, HepB, immunization record that I had gotten filled out at the health services here (and after two sticks in the arm  ). Along with it was a letter basically telling me, "oh we don't need this yet. bring this with you when you see the occupational health people here when you start residency." 😡

well, why didn't you say this before?!?!?!?

Along those lines they sent me a direct deposit form to be filled, signed and returned ASAP which I signed and sent back without my financial institution information (obviously) and they sent it back to me with a full-page letter essentially saying "we need your financial institution information".

I bet there are lots of cracks amongst the people in GME about how doctors can't read to save their lives.

All that paperwork stinks - I mentioned it before but the worst part is they need to know your new address, which you probably don't have yet.

One item. Just ONE item left before my ECFMG application goes in.

And of course it involves transcontinental faxing and remote-control bureaucracy.

(Actually I'm pleasantly surprised they accept faxes.)

No orientation info here either...we got a packet with health forms and lots of other stuff to sign, but no formal contract and no dates/places/times to show up this summer.

yeah, still nothing. i'm not gonna be here in ann arbor forever ya know so i ended up putting my permanent home address on some of the forms. so maybe the important paperwork will go there...sometime soon...maybe.

I emailed to find out official dates and was told "July 1 is your first day. I will forward orientation information as it becomes available."

Yay July 1st!

This orientation must be a massive endeavour, since it is presumably hospital-based. That might explain why we haven't received any more info... 😕

damnit, you beat me to the punch. you're like 4 steps ahead of me. dehhhhhh.

want another cookie?

We didn't have to participate in the orientation activities that the other PGY1s in other fields did. Only thing we had was the standardized patient crap (AGAIN).

I got an email today about labcoat orders  I wonder if I can specify font.

I'm not going to burn my current one at grad though - it was custom-made for me FOC in order that I wouldn't have to swim... 😎

Yes, your labcoat should have "deschutes" in Century Gothic font.

Imagine having this on your labcoat: deschutes

I hope I never have to do another standardized patient exercise ever again. I got my MD...enough of this fake patient crap!

I do not understand why people like oxycontin so much. I guess if you get addicted, then I can understand. I took some after a surgery once, and it definitely helped the pain, but it made me feel bad otherwise - nauseous, tired, etc. I didn't get any "euphoria" or anything positive out of it except for helping the pain.

I start with a month of surg path at the university hospital! :scared:

good for you!!!!!!!!!!......

though personally id clap if it were a CP rotation....

wow...off to a flying start! cool beans.

i don't think i'll find out anytime soon...vacation requests were due at the end of last month so it'll probably be a while until we get our schedules.

plus, i still haven't signed any contracts yet. so as of this moment, i'll be unemployed indefinitely starting in june.

Can you tell I'm terrified? 😉 I've talked to 1 junior and 1 senior path resident between that post and now, about an approach to that month.

For some reason vacation requests were never brought up. I asked anyway. Apparently it has to be cleared primarily by the "rotation director" depending on whatever rotation you happen to be on at the time. Doesn't make sense, but maybe it's just a PGY-1 thing.

At any rate I got what I wanted - clinical chemistry across January February and March!

I'm sure it'll be fine. They'll break you in gently.

That's interesting but your system allows for some flexibility, I suppose. We learned that we now have 4 weeks of vacation this year--we were asked to request dates for vacations weeks for the whole first year. It required quite a bit of thought and planning ahead. Hopefully I'll get my two week chunk of vacation time in March...would be great for my baseball spring training trip to Florida and the annual Vegas trip.

Whoa! That's a lot of clinical chemistry! 😱

Yeah I'm on with a senior. I'll also be acquiring Sternberg quite a bit earlier than expected!

That's what I thought. I dug up their sample rotation schedule from the website and that's probably IT for Clin Chem. I imagine I will remember diddly-squat by the time boards roll around.

I think it's good to start with surg path - I started with chem and chem is a good time to catch up on other stuff. At that point I had nothing to catch up on.

True...but you can take off early on clin chem and go golfing while the weather is still warm if you had clin chem upfront during PGY-1 year.

Ahem! I mean, you could read up on surg path to better prepare yourself for the upcoming surg path rotation...yeah, that's it.

I'm with you there. Can't wait for my island trip end May! Sun, sea, sand and glorious days of doing nothing...

Home, where my thought's escaping
Home, where my music's playing
Home, where my love lies waiting
Silently for me...

4 wks?! Dude. I clearly interviewed at the wrong places. 😀

We were asked if there were any specific dates we needed off for weddings/graduations/etc but we were not invited to request blocks of vacation time.

As yet, I have absolutely no idea what my first year schedule is going to look like. 😕

Yeah it just changed from 3-4 weeks this year (actually, I had always been under the impression that we only got 2 weeks of vacation). Basically they took one week off from an independent study block and just made it extra vacation time.
