Origin of cancer pathology terms

Dear colleagues,

Please help me with the following question.

It is well known that tumor cells can form specific groups (alveolar, tubular, trabecular, solid etc.). In literature data, I cannot find papers or other resourses mentioning the above-mentioned groups (or these terms) for the first time. Do anybody know this source?

I suspect there is relatively little backstory, but you might look back at classic articles by the old pathologists from back in the days when a lot of entities were first being formally described; I am thinking of names like Ewing, Stout and Ackerman and dates in the first half of the last century. You may find these fellows saying: "I decided to call this pattern 'alveolar', because I saw in it many small basins."

Consulting with the oldest pathologist you can find might be helpful (probably will not be posting on SDN, although you never know).

if you can get your hands on them, the works of Rudolph Virchow may be very useful. most of his archivies are in the former east germany. I have a buddy who was big into Virchow, has a PhD in medical history, an MD-PhD with AP/CP boards and then left pathology and got a SECOND phD. needless to say a brilliant guy. He did some Virchow research.

DenEvgeny, I would think it would take more than one day to review the relevant literature... especially since we are talking about papers from a century ago, before electronic indexing. And many of them will not be in English.

Another resource for you might be the archivist or research librarian at your local academic medical library.
