Hey guys,

I wanted to get some feedback and see how I should plan out the next 3 years of my medical school educations

I am currently finishing up my first year of osteopathic medical school. I am right around in the top 25% of my class and I am roughly averaging B+ in my classes

I have some research background (3 poster presentations) and have 2 research papers I am working on(not published yet). In addition, I am doing a bunch of clubs (Honors Research organization, Honors Volunteer organization, President of a club, etc). I also received an award/scholarship from my school.

Long story short I want to hear what people think I should be working on to try to pursue either and Orthopedic surgery or PM&R residency? I know the obvious answer is board prep and grades. But are there any out of the box recommendations? Maybe more conferences, networking? I know coming from a DO school ortho is competitive

I plan to continue focusing on school and research. But any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I’m also an M1 and I have been told the best thing you can do is work toward the hardest speciality to get into, so ortho for you. Get the research, volunteering, board scores required to go into ortho and if you get out there and you hate ortho you are GOLDEN for PMR.

You should join the national groups/societies associated with ortho and pmr so they know you have had interest In them for awhile..

Plan on going to conferences 3rd /4th year to get to know residency directors and maybe get interviews

I would recommend looking at the match data for DO to ortho and PMR and see how much research they have when they match too
