I've been working as a GP for few years and I am going into ortho residency this upcoming summer. I've been paying for disability insurance since graduation and I did lock in the rate couple years ago. Is it recommended to try to keep or cancel this disability insurance while in school as school seems to cover probably not as good disability insurance? I am also wary of the financials of everything as I have little kids and I am a main provider becoming a student... Any inputs would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I would reach out to your insurance rep. You might be able to get the same rate again once you graduate again since I'm assuming you got a new grad discount.
Congratulation on matching!
I'm applying this cycle and was curious how you GRE scores were? I've been practicing for 3 years now so a bit worried about applying

I was in this situation when I was in ortho residency. Treloar and Heisel came to do a lunch and learn so I showed them my policy. They advised not to cancel it because the policy I had was actually superior to one they could sell me. I appreciated their honesty so I kept the policy. Treloar and Heisel are still around so they'll probably come visit your program sooner or later but you could also reach out to them for a review.

I ended up filing a claim on my policy about 7 years after graduating so you never know.

Disability insurance pricing is based on your age. So, if you've had your existing policy for a while, it might be worth keeping.

When you enter the ortho program, I would reach out to your insurance company to apply for a rate improvement. Guardian, Principal, MassMutual, and Ameritas give better rates to orthodontists than they do GP. So, even if you keep your current policy, you should be able to lower your premium.

There are also quite a few resident discounts that you have access to while in residency.
