Im sure this question has been beaten to death in the past, but, as that was the past and this is the present, to all the DO's at categorical 4 year progs such as Upenn and Ucinn :
Isnt there going to be an issue with the AOA if you want to work in PA or michigan or whatever? Is there anyone who is actually dealing with the situation? If its still in your future, how do you plan to deal with it?

thanks

When I interviewed with UPenn last year, I talked to some DO residents who said there was an ongoing dialogue between their program and the AOA regarding this matter. As far as residency is concerned, there probably isn't any issues during your training to practice medicine within the state. However, once you have completed your training, I would think the current regulations hold that you cannot practice in those specific states unless you have completed an AOA or AOA-approved internship.

For some this was a big deal.. for others, it wasn't a big deal because they had no intention of practicing in those states.

Sorry that's all I have heard so far. There may be more recent news I have not heard.

yea thats what i pretty much know to be the case as well... bummer. Wish me luck on interviews tommorow and friday

Some info on the AOA requirements. If you are going to an ACGME program without the AOA approved internship you can still get it approved by the AOA. There is a form on the do-online website that you can download to petition the AOA for approval. Also, you can speak with the progam director and complete an application to approval as long as you get the required rotations in during your 1st year.

Go to www.do-online.org for these forms.

I hope this helps. Good luck on the interviews.

not sure how much this helps, but in the new edition of Isersons, he stated that only 4 out of over 400 petitions have been denied since its inception in 2000

At UVA we have two categorical spots and we have had a DO in each of the last two years who have gotten AOA approval without problem. As chief we have to know in advance and make sure there is adequate primary care rotations in the intern year.
