Hi all,

I am an incoming DO student at NYCOM in LI. I have an interest in Dermatology, however, I am encountering some difficulties or perhaps misinformation in how Osteopathic residencies work for Dermatology.

From what I have gathered, it seems you must complete a one year rotating internship then hope to match to a Dermatology program? Is this the case? If so, this seems like a huge risk to take. Are there any programs where you can directly match for the duration of your training?

Do any current residents in Osteopathic Dermatology residency programs have any advice for how one should best position themself to get into a program? I understand board scores are very important, but are there any other specific research opportunities or other extracurricular activities that might be beneficial?

Thanks in advance I sincerely appreciate it. If anyone would like, please feel free to personally message me if you would feel more comfortable doing so.

What from I understand, you complete an internship and then apply for the AOA derm residencies while in internship. However, I've heard that with a lot of the residencies, you can kind of audition during 4th year (like a program where you match PGY-1) and have a sort of "agreement" that you're going there after you complete your internship. The reason I say this is because a lot of the DO match lists list AOA derm when technically, the students shouldn't know for another year, you know? Keep in mind that derm is tough for DO student though and that the community is small, so networking and connecting with the right people will do you a lot of good.
