Osteopathic Neuro residency

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are you applying solely to DO residency programs?

I would like to know the same thing. From what I hear above 500 is good and above 550 makes you more competitive, but I haven't seen any real data on this.

Well first off, passing the boards is a good start. I myself was in an allopathic program and to be honest, most of my attendings had no clue what in the hell a solid COMLEX score was an always had to ask me. My program was more apt to choose applicants that they met in person and saw in action as a med student, for what it is worth.

Anyways. I would say it depends on where you are applying. I hate to say it, but if a program is not very familiar with DOs or is not DO friendly, you can score a 700 and it won't matter, they won't even know that it is an exceptional score unless somebody points that out to them.

In the DO world, you have the problem of a limited number of residency programs and slots, so that does make things a bit more competitive; however, if you also apply for allopathic spots, you are likely to get something.

In my personal experience, most programs east of the Mississippi and in the midwest are more accepting of DOs and are willing to give you a shot. If you go applying out in the western states, with the exception of perhaps a few program in california associated with Western COMP and Touro, you will be discriminated and your application will be held with reservation.

I can share on personal experience. My program had us do two months of outside rotations at Harborview Hospital in Seattle. My first week there, the hospital coders called me to ask who I was because they saw some "DO thing" at the end of my name and didn't know if I was a doctor, attending, resident, janitor, etc???

Don't let me discourage you from applying to western programs if by chance that is a consideration for you. Its kinds of like an osteopathic frontier at the moment.

Otherwise, don't sweat it too much. There is always a lot of angst and worry but I think as long as you have a solid COMLEX score you will get a chance. If you do want a competitive well known program than you will have to gun for a high score. But then again, the same would hold true for an MD applying for the same high profile residency, they too would have to score high on their USMLE.
