Osteopathic Plastics Programs...

I have been looking at the opportunities website that describes osteopathic residency programs, and something has caught my eye. It basically says that all of the DO plastics programs now allow the graduates to become certified by ACOS and ABMS.

Two questions:

1. Does anyone have anymore info on this?

2. With ABMS certification, could a graduate join ASPS, ABPS, etc?

That would be true if the program was dual accrediated. If you look, it says that the program is not dual accrediated. I think the opportunities website gives a definition of what a dual accrediated program is. Without ACGME training one is not eligible for board certification through the ABMS.

Canadian programs are not accredited by ACGME yet their graduates are allowed to be come ABMS certified. I believe graduates from programs in the UK can become board certified as well (in some specialties).

As previously noted, that particular site says rather explicitly that it does NOT participate in an ACGME sanctioned program. I don't know of any AOA/ACGME programs in Plastic Surgery.

I'm not sure how reciprocity works with the Canadian programs, but graduates of Canadian Plastics residencies are eligible to sit for their ABPS exam if they have fulfilled the ABPS requirements (the Canadian Board does not require as much GenSurg and this has been an issue for some surgeons in the past).

I spoke with the GME officer at one of the programs, and they said that graduates are in fact able to be BE/BC by both AOA and ACGME. He didn't have a good explanation about how it works, but it is true.

I don't want to say that he is wrong, but he is WRONG! You cannot become board certified through the ACGME without completing an accrediated ACGME residency/fellowship. Now can you do an ACGME fellowship after an AOA general surgery residency...sure, but you become board certified through the AOA after the AOA approves your ACGME training. I have looked into this extensively since I am AOA general surgery resident currently doing an ACGME surgical critical care fellowship and looking to do an additional fellowship in CT. I am not eligible for the ACGME critical care boards, but the AOA has approved my training and I will be taking the AOA critical care boards.

So how does completing an AOA approved plastics fellowship work into the whole 'board certified in plastic surgery.' Is it the same boards MD fellow/integrated plastic trained students sit for or what??

Separate exam. Separate board. No relationship between the two.

They are viewed by all the relavant bodies as equivalent qualifications though. So it really doesn't matter which one you hold. 👍

Thanks. Hey Dr. Millisevert, kind of off subject but I've always wondered what you're eventually going to do in the health care field? I've seen you post around the ENT/Facial Plastics and Plastic boards, and also comment quite a bit on Osteopathic programs. Did you attend a DO school?? What are you a resident in?? etc. You can PM me if you don't want to discuss it over the boards. Just curious. 👍

I'm a dentist currently completing a medical degree (not a DO) and oral and maxillofacial surgery. 👍
