how come I hardly ever see dos match into ophthalmology? I work with an ophthalmologist now and I'm starting to fall in love with the field, but where I see the neuro and rad plcements every so often, i dont recall seeing a single match into ophthalmology. Are there no do residencies in this field?

The optho residency usually starts at pgy-2, until recently the internship and residency where separate, so schools would list there pgy-1 spot (the internship), not pgy-2 (optho residency). Programs are starting to integrate the internship year so you will see true placement in the future. So if you ever wondered why some schools have a long list of "rotating internship" for their graduates its usually because they are shooting for something more competitive that requires a rotation first or that the school just listed their rotation spot and not residency.

There are 11 DO optho residencies. So there should be a couple matches from each school in AOA and/or ACGME spots

thank you for that breakdown, extremely helpful. Now when you say 11 residencies.. does that mean 11 programs or 11 people

What it usually means is that there is 11 residencies ... the number of spots each one has is different. One program may have three spots, another four etc etc.

interesting.. thanks, glad to know i can still pursue ophthalmology under a D.O. residency, although 11 residencies seems awfully sparse.. how does it compare to other specialties? Does anyone have a link that shows the total number of osteopathic residencies by specialty?

11 is sparse... which is why it's very hard to get into. Make a lot of friends, get awesome grades, top scores on COMLEX, etc.

I know a DO Ophthalmologists who has a very beautiful/successful practice..

It's rare however it's doable.

You might need to be within the top tenth percentile of your class in med school in order to achieve a residency as competitive as Rads, Ophtho, Neuro ect...

But it's definitely doable.... 😉

Just follow the google search in no particular order:

Hope it helps 😉

11 really isn't that bad, especially for being such a popular field for allo residencies. I also think that for fields like that it's very important to rotate at a hospital with a program there and get to know the people involved. Also, I see DOs match Rads all the time. I would say it's far more common than derm, or even ortho. 👍
