Do you know where you're gonna live yet Sashjenkins?

no, I don't know where I am gonna live yet. My parents were looking into buying a place becuase they are tired of paying rent and basically throwing it away. I asked a med 1 student and she said that about 1/4 of the class lives within walking distance and about 1/2 live within driving distance. I was thinking i might do the driving thing because its hard to find a place to buy near campus. But i dont konw just yet...what about you guys?

Hey Sashjenkins,
Since I am a postbacc student I already have a place. However, there are plenty of nice areas depending on how far you want to drive. Grandview and Upper Arlington are very close to school. I don't know about buying a house in those areas which are very expensive. You can also live near Easton which is no more than 15-20 minutes away. I suggest living closer to school because when you get tired and want to go home its nice to only have to drive 2 minutes rather than 15-20 min.

I know there are a lot more than 2 OSU students on this website

Are Grandview and Upper Arlington within walking distance? Or on the COTA line? How do you suggest going about looking for a place (this is all new to me)?

Grandview and Upper Arlington are not withing walking distance..you would have to drive. I am pretty sure that Victorian Village, Italian Village, and Short North are all withing walking distace. I recently went up there to look at housing. All the places near campus for rent that I saw were pretty ****ty, so I am opting to live off campus and drive so that I can live in a nicer place since I study a lot at home. There was one complex called Renaissance Village that was nice, but 2 bedrooms 1.5 bath was 1200 a month, which is pretty pricey. My parents have been looking into buying something and i found a small house in Clintonville, which is only 3.3 miles away from campus via high st. Searching for housing sucks...althoguh there are tons of for rent things, I think that alot of the good options are already taken since its already summer.
Are you from Ohio?? I am from Knoxville, TN and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill so I am completely new to the area and am not sure how all of this works either.
does anyone know about parking on campus?>>?

I did investigate parking on campus, Sash. It is about $350-400 for the year which isn't THAt bad. Have you thought about living in the new Neil apartments on the med school campus? I think it's $605 for an efficiency and $580 or so in a 4 bedroom apartment. Next year I'm all about penny pinching. Hopefully the following year, I'll have more $$ to work with.

Hey guys! I'm an OSU undergrad, if anyone has any questions about areas around or nearby campus let me know 🙂

hello everybody,

i'll be starting at osu as well. in terms of housing, i got pretty lucky. the student host i stayed with had a space open up. he lives a block from campus and he seemed like a nice guy during the time i spent with him. and since i'm from california, i don't have to stress about coming up to ohio early to look for a place now. even better, the previous roommate has decided to leave all his bedroom furniture.

when are you guys moving to columbus? i don't think i'll be doing so until the day before orientation.

Hi everyone!
I'm so excited to see some of my classmates here! I know some people with nice places in the Columbus area, so I'm living in a CHEAP crappy apartment really close to campus. My lease starts August 1, so I'll be moving in a week or two before class. I've been busy getting all the immunization and financial stuff in and I have a couple questions: Were you guys able to sign up for direct deposit yet? I want to get my fin aid flowing ASAP so I can pay for some startup costs...which leads me to my next question: Is anyone buying computers from the IBM laptop website? I'd like to get my laptop before school starts, but I want to make sure I'm getting a good deal.

I am also going to be in the M.D. Class of 2008.

I found an apartment in Dublin that I really liked, right behind the Tuttle Crossing Mall. It's about 18 miles from campus, but I thought it was the best place for me. Also, I enjoy driving, so I don't mind the commute. The Dublin area is really nice. It's home to a lot of young professionals, and it's actually quite affordable. So if you don't mind the drive and you don't have a place yet, I urge you to check it out!

The area immediatly outside OSU seemed kind of grungy. I've had enough of that kind of living (noise 24/7, rampant petty crime, Mom+Pop merchants that rip you off, old buildings, tight spaces, always the risk of your car getting towed, etc.) when I was an undergrad.

The IBM laptops, even after the discounts that they give OSU, are still quite expensive.

I've been looking around, and I think the 5 pound Dell 600M is a pretty good value. You can get a 1.5Ghz Pentium-M, with 512MB RAM, DVD/CD-burner, 40GB hard drive, b/g wireless for about $1200. I think I'll probably go with that. Actually, I had a question regarding that too: do you know how soon we'll need these laptops? I might put off buying mine for a few months if we don't need them right away.

Also, what are you guys doing for the parking permit? I'm assuming that you all received that email on parking permits. I don't think I've ever seen anything that complicated outside of class. 🙁 Are you guys thinking about going for the commuter lot, or one of the garage permits?

I thought that we needed our laptops the first week of school. However, I'm not quite sure since some of the Med 2's that I talked to said that they really didn't need them in class especially for the first week. We are starting with anatomy first so i'm not quite sure if we will really be using them except to look at cross-sections. I will ask one of the anatomy professors and will get back to you soon
🙂
Only 2.5 weeks left 😀

Here's another future Buckeye. I purchased the IBM Thinkpad that the school configured (like $1700 😱 ) and although I've had good experiences with Thinkpads, that's an awful lot of $.

I really hope that we do not need the laptops for the first week or two of class. IBM isn't even going to ship mine until the 18th at least. This is worrisome.

Right now I live by Tuttle Mall but that's too far, imho. The apts. are considerably nicer out here, but the traffic scares me. I'm moving in with an entering vet student at the lovely Olentangy Commons. aka - OSU north. Lots of prof. students and undergrads there, expect crime, fireworks, beercans, and noise - but hey, it's cheap.

Does anybody know how we need to dress for the 11th? I know the whitecoat requires a shirt/tie but I don't want to look stupid in the morning.

OSU still hasn't announced what the tuition will be for next year. I think that's rather irresponsible of them. 👎

pbn2au- welcome aboard 😀
I have a question for you. Which computer company is better dell or IBM? I have heard good things about both of them. My last computer was a dell. Did you receive a discount with IBM? Also were you able to modify your computer requirements? The reason I asked you is that yesterday I tried to modify one fo the IBM computers, but they wouldn't let me.

Garuda- I agree with you about tuition. However, I heard that it should be around 22,000 dollars. From the financial aid advisor, expect the total tuition to be around 40,000 dollars 🙁

It's darn good to be aboard - thanks 🙂. Most all laptops come from two factories in Taiwan. My feelings are that the Dell Inspiron, although cheaper than comparable IBM products, are not quite up to par build quality wise. If you're going to get a Dell I would highly recommend the Latitude series, they cost more but are of much higher quality. You may find that Dell customer support isn't too great either. They have some crazy policies too, e.g. if you reload the software that ships on your computer, you void your warranty. I steer away from Dell products when I can, but ymmv.

IBM notebooks are better constructed than the Inspiron series, and generally equal to the Latitude series quality wise, imho. Extra features such as the newer data protection system are cool too. Whether these reasons are worth the extra cost? I think so. I have had good experiences with IBM service and support, much better than Dell for sure. Simply put, I prefer IBMs. I am writing this on an old (circa 2001) IBM A21m ThinkPad that hasn't given me a bit of trouble, and I'm more than happy buy another one.

With regards to IBM customization - no, they don't allow you to customize the OSU selected (and greatly discounted) models. I purchased the mid-range one, the T42 with CDRW, 15'' screen. I'm not planning on burning any DVDs, and wanted the 15'' screen, so I didn't opt for the most expensive one

If you're having trouble getting to the OSU Med. order site on IBM- send me a pm and I'll send you the URL. Keep in mind that the two of the three models models are running on backorder and it'll take until mid-late Aug. for them to arrive 👎, so if having a computer really soon is a priority, than you might want to go Dell.

Sorry for the huge post. And 40k?!? wow

I just saw my tuition bill. It's about $7,300 in tuition and fees, for 24 credit hours. Does that seem right to you for someone whose in state?

Also, it's for the Autumn Quarter. How many quarters of school are there? If there are 4, then that's going to work out to $30,000 😱

Yes it does considering that there are three quarters in a year. 🙁
