  1. Pre-Optometry
At some point in time we are all called upon to make difficult decisions. Tell us about the most difficult decision you have had to make. How did you work towards the decision you made? What were the consequences of your decision? What lessons did you learn from this experience? Please be specific.

I really don't what to say. Am i supposed to talk about some type of emotional experience or something.
I guess for most of us at this point one difficult decision would be figuring out what to do with your life.. well at-least it was for me. but I really don't know what direction to go with this question...

I had a really hard time with this too. For me the toughest decision was whether to half ass my opt apps for 2011 entry or really make them awesome and increase my chances for getting in and wait till 2012 cycle. I didn't write about this because it makes me seem unprepared and indecisive. Im not either but it comes off worse than it is. I wrote about having to decide to leave a student job that was easy and paid me well. I decided to be a broke student instead. Basically I was working a desk job in IT. this clearly has nothing to do with biology/medicine/optometry. I was the only one who wasn't a compsci major, and I was just there for a check. I'm rambling here but my point is that it wasn't a life changing experience, I just took something that kind of sucked and embellished with some emotion and it made it seem a little more dramatic. If I end up getting accepted to some of the schools I'm applying to, I will have the REAL toughest decision of my life, what city do I want to move to. I'm in Maryland so there is nowhere that doesn't involve a substantial move. PCO is the only school that doesn't involve me getting on a plane. That is probably their reasoning for asking this type of question.

what schools have u been accepted to so far? I've only heard from PCO and the rest of the skools have put my application on hold till they get my OAT score.. Im registered to write the exam during the first week of october.. I probably should of spent the summer studying for it but I was in classes and working on improving my gpa..

I've only heard from PCO so far too, I think all the other schools I applied to are taking their time. I have heard people on this board getting interviews from ICO, SCO, etc I'm not applying to any of those. I'm applying to NECO, SCCO, OSU, and NOVA as well and still yet to hear from NECO about a supplementary. I just submitted the OSU support today and it says to allow 2 weeks to hear back.

As far as your oat, are you taking it for the first time or retaking it in oct? I would Devore as much time as you can to it, I've heard a good score can get you in just as much as a bad score can keep you out.

I'll be writing it for the first time and Im so nervous! im not aiming to score a 380 but am hoping to at least score above a 320 in each section.. I am using the Kaplan DAT book to study..I'm struggling with figuring out what the best approach to studying would be since i only have a month.. 🙁

Do as many practice tests as you can, that's the beat way you will get practice with timing, and simulate the test as much as you can. (no breaks, tv, food) this way after 3-5 practice tests you'll have a good idea of where you stand. I did better on test day than on any of my practice tests too! Keep in mind the DAT has no physics, so make sure to study that!!

Try this as a practice test and do as many as you can. That's the way I studied, and I did well 🙂

Hoops,

You're way too high strung. You're worried what to wear. You're worried about your essay. Surely you've made some difficult decisions in your life. Pick one and talk about how you made a decision and whether in retrospect you would have made the same decision again. It's not difficult.

Later on, you said you're not aiming for 380 on the OAT? Why not? Aim as high as you possibly can! Go for the 400! If you "just miss" you'll have a 380.

But most of all, just calm the heck down! Have you always been this way? 🙂
