So far I've been owning up to my lackluster beginnings in undergrad, and writing about my reinvention over the past few years. If there is space, I also add what I've been doing this summer (observership with A LOT of patient interaction: I interview, do physical exams, present to attendings, etc)

I feel like its better to be upfront about it than have an elephant in the room

Gonnif was a big help with this when I was discussing my greatest obstacle essay, but want to see how it fits into "others"
Thoughts on taking this approach?

Also, would bringing up stats in this type of essay be a bit gauche? I don't want to patronize any ADCOMs since the numbers are on the primary, but just highlight them

Eh, I don't think bringing up exact numbers would be good. It throws the focus on the numbers rather than on your reinvention.
