Psych is more rewarding work and you will enjoy your income and lifestyle more. If you love psychiatry. But if you prefer manual procedures, short relationships, and surgery, it's definitely not worth it.

ENT is more rewarding work and you will enjoy your income and lifestyle more. If you love ENT. But if you prefer long interviews, longitudinal relationships, and pharamcology, it's definitely not worth it.

One is a mental health specialty. One is a surgical specialty. You need to figure out what you want to do for a living and go for it.

Thanx for da reply ..........but which one is more prestigious....

The same reason someone else came here, inquiring about being a sex therapist, and stated, "I just would love talking about sex ALL DAY!" and we humored their inquiry with serious responses and career advice for at least 15 posts.

In some countries (like the Middle East and South Asia), certain medical professions have a certain level of "prestige" attached to them - or at least that's the case in Pakistan, where I'm originally from. That is not the case in the US. In fact, your very question would be considered disrespectful in the American medical profession. This is a substantial cultural difference... while there is some level of "prestige"-based distinction in general American society, many doctors would be offended by the implication that one specialty is more "prestigious" than another. We don't play that game here.

And that's the reason why people are avoiding answering your question. It's disrespectful. You shouldn't ask it. You may not have the cultural context to understand that, but just take our word for it.

Also, you should know that typing things like "thanx" and "da" will invalidate any level of "prestige" in the medical field. That's how teenagers talked in 1999. Again, I know that it's fashionable to talk like that in some countries, but it's unprofessional everywhere.

Oh come on. ENT is much more prestigious within the medical community, though I don't think lay people really understand what they do or that it's a fairly tough match. That said, I wouldn't trade psychiatry for anything.

LOL!

Like ohmygawd! That shiznit never goes out of style, yo homie! What a square fuddy duddy! Oops better keep a lookout or the 5.0 gonna have a cow! But yeah, that's still fresh! So just keep on trucking! Propa! Remember: YOLO!! Fer sure!

Quick question.

30 yr old attempted suicide, but missed and shot his face off.

Would you rather be the one tasked with delving into his motivations and emotional repercussions of said act, or the one piecing humpty-dumpty's face back together?

What? Psych doesn't have as much prestige as ENT??? This is news to me-- after having gone through almost 4 years of psych residency this thread has crushed my dreams to surpass those throat poking, nose picking, ear scratching docs in respect. Now I'll never feel good about myself. Nooooooooooooooooooo! *falls down on knees and cries to the heavens*

Exactly! I have lots of tissues to share!

Back in med school, I did an ENT rotation alongside a student who had plans of applying to ENT.
I was there to witness the day that other student's dream of doing ENT died: The day we spent in the office watching the attending suctioning mucus from the noses of chronic sinusitis sufferers. She was so grossed out by it that she ended up going for a different surgical specialty.

So, basically, you just need to figure out which one you find most disgusting: interviewing malodorous homeless people about their auditory hallucinations, or suctioning peanut butter-like mucus from people's noses. And, really, I'm not sure if either of those is actually prestigious.

ENT was very interesting in that I never really felt like anybody was actually interested in ENT per se, except some of the people really into like the cochlear implants and stuff like that. It's "prestigious" because it's a more difficult match than a lot of things, based mostly on the fact that it's a pretty nice lifestyle with a pretty good pay and it's not too cerebral. Most of the folks that wanted to do ophtho (the most similar specialty in terms of the sort of people interested in it) seemed really into eyes and the idea of getting to do surgeries and make a lot of money and work a lot less hours than other surgical specialties. I think ENT is a great specialty for people that want a job that isn't too terrible, enjoy doing procedures, and that pays pretty well.

But yeah, mucus...

That fits what I've seen too. My buddy wants to do it and has done electives in it. When he talked about why he liked it, he did so along the lines you're talking about but added the ability to work mostly clinic when he got older. So maybe the added years to a less rigorous more lifestyle oriented surgical career.

But yeah. How do people get interested in this stuff. As long as I'm getting paid enough to make good on my loans I have to be interested in the basic material of the field.

He did say he liked the complex, delicate anatomy of the neck and other structures. So...different strokes, I guess.

And how does that make you feel?
See what I did there...

I'm guessing you're trolling but if not, well in the U.S. ENT gets more money and prestige. Life style is more subjective, and based on how much money you want to make, but per dollar amount you probably will have "better" life style with ENT as well. That said, if you like psych then you should do it because it's not a bad life either.

ent of course....I wouldnt do it for 5 times the pay psychiatrists make(which in some cases isnt that far from the truth)....

this is obviously a troll though. nobody decides between ent and psych any more than they would decide between taking a vacation to the french countryside vs Panama City.

Nah..I'm still convinced the real troll here is vistaril. Seriously dude..with ur responses why r u in this field. Psych is way more interesting and u can make serious dough if u do it right. Especially with the changes in that procedures are getting less reimbursement...psych looks pretty darn good right now
