Ouch! How badly will this hurt me?

So I'm going to be applying to dental schools after I graduate. When I was a sophomore, I applied to an early assurance program to a medical school. This was before I explored dentistry as a career. I was rejected from the program and in retrospect, I'm glad because I've discovered that I like dentistry as a profession much more.

I've never taken the MCAT or started an AMCAS app. Do you guys know if I need to say that I've applied to medical school before in this instance? The program was basically one where if you were accepted, you were guaranteed an acceptance when you applied as a senior on the AMCAS.

I don't want to lie. How badly would it hurt me if I have to say yes? I have good grades (3.9+ sci/ns GPA) and a good DAT so I don't think it would appear like I'm using dentistry as a fallback.

What would you do if you were in my shoes? 😕

If you've filed formal paperwork with some Medical school portal agency then you will need to declare that. It wont hurt you as long as your grades and DAT scores are good. Plus you'll need a good explanation as to why you've had a change of heart from MD to DDS.

There's no reason to bring this up. Don't lie but that's non relevant info at this point.

Do nothing, and continue with your daily life. Seriously.

The school I applied to also has a dental school... that I would really like to apply to...

Could I really say no? The early assurance program truly seems like a nebulous gray area though. I was applying for a guaranteed acceptance from the med school two years later.

Schedule a meeting with the dental school to discuss your situation and let us know what they recommend.

I wouldn't put it on AADSAS. I'd fill out AADSAS as a 100% pure dental student. But, if any secondaries come back to you and ask "Have you ever applied to medical school before?" maybe put like one sentence: "Began as an early assurance candidate for medical school at XX University, but instead decided to complete XX major and apply to dental school instead". Easy enough. Innocent enough.

Thanks for the responses. Doesn't the AADSAS primary ask if you've applied to other health professions schools before?

I think it does, I would check no. I would call a dental school (or two or three) just to be sure, but I think early assurance is a lot different than the actual application process.
