OK, I just looked at the tuition for the University of Illinois for out of state people and its 46,000 dollars a year. Is that correct? Does anyone else think that's insanely expensive? That would leave me with approximately a 300,000 dollar debt unless they give aid to out of state students which is probably not likely.

I guess I'm not going to my interview unless I get other Chicago interviews.

i think that sounds about right.....

whats even more ridiculous is stl.
my friend got accepted but decided not to go cause it was basically close to 60K/YR.

How is that even more ridiculous? St. Louis is around 38K in tuition per year which is in the upper part of the norm for privates anymore (Tulane, BU, etc). Exactly which privates are significantly less than 50K a year with living expenses?????

Its ridiculous for a public school and class size, etc. I think that's what the poster meant.

I would rather pay 38K a year for a private school somewhere less exciting than Chicago than 48K for a class size of 300 at a school I haven't really heard that many great things about that is so far away from home (CA).

you should check but I believe you can get in-state after year 1 at UIC. It's not true at all school but I believe UIC is one of the ones that does.

Then that changes things. Definately look into it.

A lot of public schools are around 35k for out of state and others go anywhere from 45k to 51k. It really depends on the school.

SLUs 38k per year is really not bad at all. It is the norm for most schools to play around those numbers. It is definately MUCH better than paying 50k in a state U.

I read that Colorado is 68K. Is that possible?

I am not sure if the policy has changed from last year, but for an out-of-state student to receive in-state treatment, you would have to bring in an income (from an IL job) of some nontrivial amount of money. I think it was about $17k/yr, and it can not be from a University affiliated job (i.e., teaching assistant, research, etc.) or scholarship (b/c that is not taxed).

I thought it was a big hassle, but out-of-state students are a big cash cow for schools. That's why I stated in-state!

Happy hunting,
PD

BTW, the abovepost was in response to the OP.

my friend got in last yr, out of state. She wanted to go, but 60k wasnt cutting it, they offered her instate tuition though!!!!!! But she still turned them down cause she got a full ride to Wayne state

hope im not repeating information, but if this helps...

as far as uic goes, to get instate tuition, you hve to be an illinois resident (drivers license/?income?/etc) for at least 12 months prior to the start date of orientation. to be consitered in the instate applicant pool, you need to be a resident (same criteria listed above--but call the school to find out exact criteria) for >12 months before submission of AMCAS materials.
