I haven't heard too much about Tennessee and their adimission process. They don't participate in AADSAS. Does anyone know how compettitive it is for out of staters? If it's even worth applying with a 3.3 GPA and 3.1 sGPA with 21 DAT? any info is much appreciated.

I think you have a pretty good chance. Their average DAT scores aren't that high if I remember right. I might also apply there but having to fill out another application is a pain in the butt.

Do they accept many out of state applicants? Does anybody out there know of anyone getting in? Thanks

Check on predents. They accept a fair amount of out-of-state students. But I would check the ADEA guide and their website to see if they give preference to people from certain states. I think Alabama gives preference to students from other Southern states, and TN might be the same.

they don't accept a whole lot of oos'ers....but they are starting to accept more of them here over the past couple years due to money problems (oos'ers gotta pay that extra tuition).

i also know they have so many seats set aside for arkansas residents so if you look at thow many they take out of state you have to account for that as well.

Having to fill out another application is to your advantage. Because many people are too lazy to do it, their number of applicants is significantly lower than it would be if they did AADSAS. Thus, lower competition, lower admissions standards for DAT/GPA.

UT has 80 seats, and I believe ~16 are for out-of-staters. They do like to see high sGPA's. So if you've got an avg DAT (18-19) but have a sGPA of 3.6 or higher, you've got a chance...an interview invite at least. So having a high GPA is key. However with a 3.2 GPA and 3.1 sGPA, chances aren't looking so great.

EDIT: Hmm...don't quote me on the 16 number. I can't remember if that's the total out-of-state students or just the number for their agreement with Arkansas.

The application is actually extremely easy to fill out. It is all completed online and basically a repeat of some basic information on AADSAS. You don't even have to put in your coursework! Although your DAT is great for them, your gpa is lacking for an out-of-state applicant. I know they have very few spots for out of state. They also do not send out rejections until after the final decision(you will just find yourself not getting an interview). So you may get an interview then get strung along until the very last decision(which they only have 3 rounds, 1 for Dec. 1, then one in Feb/March, and the final in April/May depending on how behind they get).

But if you call (on a good day) and speak with admissions usually Dr. Coleman will give you SOME insight on where you might stand...but don't be shocked if he doesn't give you the time of day though. The man is very hot and cold. I have spoken with him many times and it just depends on the day! He is much more friendly in person though, so watch for a school visit from him...you will learn a lot about their process! I did hear they are starting their interview in August this year though...

Hey... I've talked to Dr. Coleman. I think that #16 is set aside for Arkansas residents since they don't have a dental school. They take ~50 in-state residents...so that leaves ~14 for non-TN/AR residents! Kinda tough if you're not from these 2 states, but also, like it was said...the application is really easy to fill out...you don't have to put in coursework. However, you do have to print off volunteer verification forms that need to be signed and mailed in...so that's a little bit of extra hassle.

According to Predents, they have ~466 applications a year. Let's say about half are from Tennessee and Arkansas combined. Then that means as an out-of-state applicant, you have a 1/16 chance of getting accepted. Those odds are better than your chance of getting accepted in any private school, with the closest being USC with a 1/18.63 chance of acceptance (check Predents for "Approx # of Applicants/Seat).

It's tough to get into any dental school, but not tougher to get into Tennessee relative to other schools. Certainly not tougher to the point that you should disqualify it from your application list.

Also, they say that letters of recommendations aren't required, but that's not entirely true. They have evaluation forms on the application site that you have to print out and give to either 3 professors or have your pre-professional committee fill it out for you.

I talked to my brother who did his Pedo there, and he said for me not to even bother. I am white and from Wyoming and they say on their website that they encourage women and minorities, so given that I am neither I decided not to. I am not trying to spark some racial debate that I have seen play out on SDN before, but they say it themselves. 👎

I would not bother with a gpa or sgpa lower then 3.5

look through the official UT acceptance thread from this year

anyone, including me, did not get accepted with a gpa lower than 3.4 i think. They do not care to much about DAT score. this year, they even told me, that they just went through after interviews and accepted people just based off gpa....
and im instate....

many of their out of state seats are for ark applicants
