Hi,
I'm currently taking some pre-Reqs at my local Community College with the hopes of getting accepted into a 2-year Radiation Therapy (RT) program next fall at another community college about 1.25 hours away. It's a competitive school that only takes about 8 applicants. However, I have a good understanding of their point system for acceptance and feel very confident I will have enough due to my current BS degree in Earth Science I completed 17 years ago with a 3.6 GPA. Also, the fact I am on a path to have straight As in my 4 pre-reqs that the RT program said I still lacked for them to accept me. Between those courses/grades, I should have enough points to be on the upper end of the point range they use.
A couple of months ago I shadowed RTs at a local hospital treatment center and got to visit with the dosimetrists as well. Since then, my goal is actually Dosimetry. According to the guy at the hospital that is responsible for hiring, I still have to go the path of RT first and work as an RT for at least a year before I could move forward with Dosimetry. I thought I would post here to see if you guys agree and what you thought the job outlook for Dosimetry was. The pay seem much better than RT as well and it looks like one can get into six figures.
Also, can anyone recommend any good Dosimetry schools? They seem hard to track down although I heard of one in Ohio. However, I am in Charlotte, NC and do not know of a one near here. I also heard it was possible to do on the job training. The problem is that I am married and just had a little girl, so running off to school in another state for a year could be a real problem.
Thanks for any advice.
