Does anyone know the proper procedure for trying to land outside EM rotations during my transitional year? I will be at a site next year that does not have an EM program.

Asking the program you're at if they allow them, and asking the program you want to go to if they do.

I guess I didn't think anything in this convoluted process would actually be straightforward... Thanks!

That's how I did it. Started super early in the year, like now-ish.

Correct. When I ranked my internship year choices I made sure I knew all of their policies on outside rotations. Ironically I chose first (and matched) an intern year that did not allow for electives outside of the hospital. But it considered "the hospital" to be both the home hospital and the name brand university hospital that it was partially owned by. So... yea. That was a nice thing for me and my EM elective.

But first and foremost you have to know VERY well what the rules for your program are.

Also, much easier to stay in the state than to get two separate training licenses. I was successfully able to navigate both Carolinas, but I wouldn't recommend it as first choice.

I'll be in NY, so should be a lot of opportunities.
