Hi everyone. I am lucky enough to be accepted at these two MD schools as an Ohio resident. NEOMED’s CTE deadline is June 5th, so need to decide asap. Currently interested in orthopedics, but open to exploring other surgical specialties. Would appreciate your insight!

Oakland University William Beaumont (OUWB)
Class size: 125
Pros:
  • Students seem very happy and supported in a younger school that is committed to being approachable
  • Partner hospital in Beaumont Health, one of the largest systems in Michigan
  • Service-oriented with a strong focus on mentorship
  • Strong match list
  • Pass/fail

Cons:
  • Tuition high ($60k, although they mentioned they give a lot of scholarships, 240k total tuition)
  • Newer school so smaller alumni network
  • 3.5 hours from family
  • Would be kinda starting blank slate not knowing anyone who could guide me

Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED):
Class size: 180-200
Pros:

  • Many friends who attend already and know some incoming kids entering the class, can recieve major guidance from my existing connections
  • Pass/Fail
  • Service oriented with ties to a few hospitals in the northeast ohio area like Cleveland clinic akron general, but no direct partner hospital
  • Decent match list? Perhaps a bit more primary care oriented
  • Closer to home (2.5 hours)
Cons:
  • Campus in the middle of nowhere (Rootstown, Ohio which is like 30 minutes from Akron and 1hr from Cleveland, 15 minutes from Kent tho which is a small college town)
  • In person classes every day with flipped classroom videos to watch before lecture and mandatory attendance
  • High tuition for public state school (~208k total tuition)
  • Lottery system for rotations so can get shipped out to Youngstown for a few weeks then be in Akron then Cleveland
  • Dip in STEP pass rates?
I know that either way if I work hard enough and with a little luck both schools can get me to where I want to be, but I would appreciate if you guys think there’s a clear answer here. Personally leaning towards Oakland as I think getting in that new environment would be good for me and I can meet a ton of new people in the Dearborn/Detroit area. Great food down there! Thanks guys!
