Hello everyone,

I did not expect to have this conundrum, but here I am. Stuck with the double edged privilege of choice between two unique medical schools. As it stands, I am interested in EM, PSY, or IM with a sub specialty. WI resident.

Below are some pros/cons I see in each program. Any outside opinions would be great. Thanks!

UWSMPH – WARM program (Wisconsin Academy for Rural Medicine).
COA: $63,000
Pros:
  • Opportunity to pursue MD/MPH. I am a big fan of public health. Adding MPH to MD adds 1 year (typically after M2) but is often paid for by the school.
  • Opportunity to do my clerkships around WI – the “rural” effect. Some of the hospitals do not have residents, so med students potentially have more 1-1 time with docs (better skills exp. and better relationship building with LOR writers).
  • Well known reputation/prestige and matching for this school. Top ranked research and primary care school.
  • I love Madison and the incoming class seems legit.
Cons:
  • Traveling for M3/M4 year… I am 50/50 on rural medicine. I like the 1-1 aspect with preceptors (more oppurtunity for skills training, etc) but I feel like I may miss out on doing my rotations at a teaching hospital.
  • Ranked classes.
  • COA is 10k more.
OUWB
COA: $53,000
Pros:
  • I love the mission, vision, environment, and the focus on medical humanities.
  • Unadulterated 4-year Medical school program. No traveling M3/M4 years.
  • Up and coming medical school. I really feel like this school is becoming something great. It had an amazing match class and the entire school/faculty/etc. seems to be working hard to establish OUWB as an exceptional program.
  • Beaumont hospital seems legit. Good experience for clerkships.
  • Mandatory research project. I did not have much research as an undergrad and the EMBARK program seems to be good for students in my shoes.
Cons:
  • No duel degree MD/MPH options - no unique blend of medicine and public health.
  • Class heavy and required for honors. This has been OUWB student's largest complaint. The expectation for class attendance kinda sucks.
  • New school. Reputation and prestige not on par with UW - Madison.

Pretty torn between the two. UW for the prestige/reputation and duel degree/public health. OUWB for the feelz and better COA.

EDIT: I modified the title and excluded MCW - CW.

do you know that you want to do rural medicine? you applied to the rural program but then you list the rural part as a con?

what are the cost differences including cost of living

There are aspects that I like about rural medicine. I currently work at a stand alone ER in rural Wisconsin and I love how resourceful we need to be. I like the opportunity to be an advocate in underserved areas. For WARM in particular, I have shadowed and worked at some of the hospitals that they send M3/M4 students to (Marshfield Medical Center) and both the hosp. systems and WARM docs seem legit.

However, I don't like the idea that I would have to travel around WI for my rotations and I don't think I am interested in primary care (excluding PSY).

COA for UW would be $63k/ year, COA for OUWB is $53k.

Narrowed it down between UW and OUWB. OUWB offered a 50% tuition scholarship. I am pretty torn between the two.

Not sure how important cost is to you, but have you asked UW-Madison to match your OUWB scholarship? I recently attended UW’s second look and heard from M1’s that admissions did this for some students in their class.
