this upcoming fall i will be taking 3 courses. biochemistry, human physiology, and physics at University of minnesota. Do you think this is an overload or possible to do good in.

I think that is a pretty heavy course load if you are on the quarter system...but I had a couple quarters where I had to take three tough courses at the same time. I tried to usually do 2 tough courses with a gen ed course thrown in. Good luck though and if you are on semesters then you should be fine.

Sure it's definitely doable. But you have to have drive and stamina. Stay on top of things the whole time.
In one of my previous term, I had biochem, organic chem II (+ lab), physical chem II (+ lab), complex analysis, and physio together. Pulled off a 4.0 that term too.

BTW, during the organic chem II exam, one of the students seated 5 rows ahead of me had a seizure because someone left his/her cell phone on and it rang -- talk about distractions.

How does it look to dental schools to only take 3 classes when you're on the semester system?

I have 2 semesters left in college, and I only have 6 classes I need to take - 4 science courses and 2 non-science courses. I was thinking about just taking 3 classes each semester because I don't feel like taking a random 4th class that serves no purpose, but I don't want adcoms to think I'm taking the easy way out by taking a lighter course load.

I'd take the easier of the two, if possible, fall semester when you will have the majority of the interviews. If you're worried, take a fun art class.

I won't be applying until after I graduate. I looked into art classes, but the professors are all pretty bad.

If you are on quarter system too...

That will actually be the same schedule as mine for fall quarter next year. I will also be doing >12 hours/wk of research with a bunch of EC's. So I predict that it will be very possible to do well with that schedule. But it completely depends on how much sci you can handle. If you've taken science heavy quarters before (i've taken 4 sciences/1 non-science in a few past quarters), then you should be fine. But if you're not used to packing your sciences (or you don't particularly like one of those 3 subjects), then maybe take 1-2 non-sci instead of the 3rd sci.

Will you be working while you go to school?

Last fall, I took Biochemistry, Histology (basically, physiology on a microscopic scale) and Physics w/ lab and worked 30+ hours a week. I got a B in Histo and Physics but a D in Biochem and screwed my chance of getting into dental school this year. I definitely could have gotten an A in Histo if I'd had more time (I got A's on all the slide tests), but I don't think I could have done better than a C in Biochem with that teacher.

If you're only going to be going to school, it's doable, but I would advise against it if you have a lot to juggle. Also, a lot of it depends on what comes easy to you -- if you are a chemistry and physics whiz, you will probably have no trouble! Those happen to be my achilles heels, so it was a stupid move for me to try it. 😳 Good luck!

yeah thanks to all you guys for the advice. I seem to be good a chemistry so i should like biochem i guess. I am just afraid of physics haven't done it in a while, since high school. Plus there will be a lab for phys and lab for physics. Hopefully i can pull of all A's.

I am a Biochem major, and I have the same schedule this semester. The BCH course mixes all of sciences and applies them to certain concepts. So you have to know a little bit of everything in order to do well in the course. Courseload is not that bad as long as you manage your time wisely.
For the fall, I will have to end up taking;

Anatomy, Physical chemistry, Medicinal chemistry, Biochemistry (400), Research 😀

How does it bode for those of us who only take 1 science class/semester??

If I do well in them (and on the DAT), will it matter?

No. If anything, the labs will get pretty annoying, depending on how many lab reports are due.
