I recently got accepted to Ohio State, and while I love the school and the program, I am slightly hesitant to jump on the offer right away due to some of the breed specific legislation in the area. Although there is not a true ban on the breed there are some very intense rules that must be followed to have one: must attain $100,000 insurance policy, cannot ever take the dog off of the leash in public, etc. I am from California and am used to taking her to play fetch in the park and out in public. It's hard to imagine confining her to a "backyard only" lifestyle. I am wondering if there is anybody out there who owns a pit bull in/around Columbus that can give me an idea of what the attitudes of the residents are like and how strictly enforced the rules are (not that I have an intention of breaking them).
Thanks

As a fellow pit bull owner / enthusiast I feel for you, making that decision. Things may be changing for Ohio though, as we speak:

Good luck on your decision and I hope that the law changes in your favor. Either way, make sure you have your dog vaccinated, chipped, and licensed to be on the safe side. A CGC helps too if you have any neighbor complaints or issues finding housing.

I live in Ohio (though not in Columbus), and the only time I've seen any breed laws enforced is when the dogs in question are either in a shelter or have had a run in with the law (bit someone, got loose, etc.). At the shelter I volunteer at we sometimes get around it by calling dogs that look only part pit a "terrier mix" or some other kind of mixed breed.

There are lots and lots of pit bulls around here. I agree with everything that's been said, but I would be hesitant to take one off leash because I'm pretty sure the police have the right to have your pit bull confiscated if it's off leash. Not sure how strictly that's enforced-when I moved to Columbus I got a Boxer instead of a pit for these exact reasons. There are quite a few apartment complexes with breed restrictions but in my complex pits aren't allowed and I know of at least two that live here and no one complains.

Bottom line, I think it's very possible, though there might be a few headaches. Like bunnity said though, things may be changing. I wouldn't let it keep you away from OSU.

There is supposedly a few websites to help with pet friendly housing (and breed friendly as well)... does anyone know any of the websites? Googling it has worked a little, but I thought I'd put some more feelers out.... thanks y'all! Can't leave my handsome pitbull love behind! 😀
