Hi,

If you had to choose between the oxford handbook of clinical medicine or step up to medicine for your internal med rotation, which would you choose and why? Thx

I thought the oxford handbook of clinical medicine was a portable book to fit in your white coat while step up to medicine was a review textbook to use as a potential study source for the rotation?

Anyways at my hospital site for internal med, most students used step up to med as their study source but almost no one used the oxford book while on the wards. Instead everyone used the pocket handbook from MassGen as their book to carry around the wards.

As a caveat, one of the interns during my IM rotation did suggest I carry around oxford instead of the MassGen pocket handbook but he was the exception. Everyone else carried around the green book, and this includes students and residents.

Well good luck with whatever you decide to use, but I really think you need both a pocket book and a larger review book as a study source.

I have actually read both cover to cover.

I feel that the Oxford Handbook is the premium Internal Medicine book for Medical Students. It is very extensive and covers practical procedures and emergencies in depth. The only trouble I would see for American students are the values used - for example, kPa for pressure, rather than mm Hg and the use of mmol/l for concentration. I'm not sure if there's an American version of the book (I know there is a series of Oxford American Handbooks), which would obviate these potential downfalls.

Step Up is a good book - quite good for theory, lacking on the practical side. It contains a lot of high yield information and would serve you well if you don't want a resource as comprehensive as the Oxford.
