Oxidation state vs d electrons

How do d electrons and oxidation state metals in metal complexes relate?

D orbitals are really funky and aside from what you learned in gen chem (the order in which they hypothetically gain and lose electrons), I think anything else is way beyond the scope of the MCAT. I remember asking my professor about d orbitals in regard to complex ion formation. He tried to use several different theories to explain it, midway into each explanation realizing it wouldn't work. Finally he just said "that's a good questions, if you find the answer let me know."

The only rule I know of is that atoms that have d orbitals could have more than 1 oxidation states
Fe: +2/+3
Cu: +1/+2
etc.
