I was wondering why this was named oxyethane because there are three carbons in this structure.

looks like oxacyclobutane to me

oxirane = oxacyclopropane

THF = oxacyclopentane

See the pattern? There are other ways to name cyclic ethers...but the oxa-method seems to be the easiest to remember.

wait..if that's the pattern, then it oxyethane does not fit the pattern, because that would imply that it has 1 carbon doesn't it, whereas it has 3 carbons

Right....using the oxa trend...I would call it oxacyclobutane. Like I said though, there are a number of ways to name cyclic ethers so...who knows maybe oxyethane works as well.
