P.A. and research

Hey guys can a P.A. get on the faculty of a medical school to do research? This would be an interesting path to follow for someone who wants to do clinical research. Maybe get a PH.D with the P.A.. I know that nurses can do research but would a P.A. be able to do more and also command a salary like that of their M.D. countrtparts? Please any info on this topic would be great. Thanks in advance.

YUP, LOTS OF PA, PHD AND PA, MPH FOLKS OUT THERE DOING RESEARCH.
rod hooker in texas(pa, phd) is quite prolific as is lyle larson, pa, phd as chief researcher, dept of cardiology at university of washington

Duke is advertising a research fellowship for PA's. Nice stipend too! Too bad I have a kid starting college or I'd look into it.

I would LOVE to do clinical research. Can you tell me little more about what a PA can do research wise? Also how long would it take to get a PA/PhD? Do they have dual degree programs for that? I’ve never heard of PA’s doing that.

I'm basically headed in the optometry direction, but sometimes I worry about how closed ended it would be, but I think as long as I can do research with my practice I will be happy. To go OD/PhD would take 7 years, and if I ever wanted a family that would be impossible. I’ve also thought about just going PhD but I want to see patients. Any info you could give would be WONDERFUL!

there are currently no dual degree pa/phd programs. there are a few pa/mph and lots of pa/ms programs. most folks who get a phd do it before or after the pa so timing varies with the particular type of doctorate. there are a few pa/pharmd folks out there(there is a dual degree program for that at u of wa):
