Perhaps a brief break from the "Optometry Sucks" threads that are the staple of this forum: Should the P.D. measurement be included on a prescription for eyeglasses? If it has not been, should it be supplied upon request from the patient?

What do you think?

Sure, why not? You'll induce a small amount of prism depending on the power if the PD is off.
 
The patient is probably trying to order online. If you've already measured it, sure give it to the pt. if not, pt can figure it out himself.
 
Pd's aren't generally measured as part of the exam, just normally part of the fitting process. Sometimes people used to call my old office asking for it clearly trying to order online and had never ordered from us, just done exams only. When I told them we legitimately didnt have a measurement for them, they would get angry and said some choice words.

Unfortunately by law it is a required part of the Rx. When we measure the pd, its for examination purposes, not for dispensing. If they insist on it, I would have them sign something stating we are not responsible for any glasses remakes or re-examinations.
ie buy online at your own risk. We have this policy and after thinking about it, most patients decide that its not worth the risk.

what law?
 
When I was working at a private practice our managers would discourage releasing PD info, but in the end there wasn't really a way to say no when the measurements were documented right in front of the patient. Many people have admitted to me that it was so they could order online, but guess what guys?!?!?! Most of the online sites (at least the ones from China) now send you PD rulers and instructions with every order. Some of these patients were wielding PD rulers that were better than the ones in our office.
