I heard UG students across the country are asking for P/F grades for current semester due to disruptions and online classes. So what will be the impact on next cycle?

that sounds like another "you are legally allowed to leave if the teacher is 14mins late"
i hope students aren't claiming mental distress over this because that's just sad and lazy

Where did you hear this? From one premed trying to avoid a C??? I certainly haven't heard it, and I am just a few weeks from finals, so, while my school is going online along with everyone else, I don't think there is any chance my school is just going to ditch letter grades at this point in the semester, regardless of what they end up doing with finals.

I'll bet that is what's going to happen everywhere, regardless of what "students across the country are asking for." The alternative would just be too disruptive. Imagine if you are right, and that makes your kid (who might have been cruising toward all As and will now just receive Ps along with everyone else) have to retake pre-reqs before entering med school because med schools still want to see grades (since most people will still have them for most or all classes), coronavirus or not. What will he be asking for then?? 🙂

At my school, professors are the ones pushing for P/F grades because they don’t feel they can evaluate students fairly in a format that’s new to everybody. No student I know is claiming “mental distress,” but I do have friends who don’t have internet at home, who will be attending online classes in the middle of the night because of time differences, and who have unstable home situations that will make studying difficult for them. Personally I was anticipating a GPA boost this semester, but I’m not about to complain if P/F makes another student’s life more bearable. Also, maybe grades aren’t the most important thing right now given that there’s a pandemic?

I heard from parents that students started petition drives to change grades to P/F. Since you always tie anything I ask back to my kid, I am happy to tell you that he finished all the prereqs and changing to P/F won't impact his upcoming application at all. My post is to simply to start a conversation and I know you would respond 🙂

I see what you are talking about on change.org. There are also petitions going the other way, basically petitioning against the petitions asking for changes to P/F grading. Ultimately, it's really not worth a discussion here. It's just a bunch of kids expressing their right to free speech. There has not been a single report of any UG doing this, and it's unlikely that they will for the reasons I expressed above. Leave it to the helicopter parents to stir up a discussion about nothing!!! 🙂

By the way, please reread my post with respect to your son. I did not tie back the petition to him -- what I tied back is how he would feel if his As became Ps if schools actually responded to the petitions, which I why I am pretty sure they won't.
