I'm wondering what I should bring...I would like input:
-carry on suitcase- should I pack my suit in a separate bag? what works?
-my suit, different shirts to wear underneath, pantyhose, coat, shoes
-leather folder
-some kind of bag? to carry my stuff in on interview day
-copies of my application
I'm just nervous that I'll fly across the country and forget something...yikes
Hi there,
Here was my interview strategy:
Pack your suit in one of those carry-on hanging bags. When you get on the plane, the flight attendant can hang the bag for you. You can pack or wear some comfortable and casual clothes but make sure that you do not get separated from your interview suit.
Carry a larger bag or case containing the following: extra panty hose, shoe wipes for scuffs and an extra blouse(in case you get makeup on your original). Carry alcohol wipes and baby wipes too (can be used for stains and wiping your hands). Yes, carry copies of everything in your application so that you can offer a copy if something is lost. Also, get the name of any person at the school that was helpful to you. Send a thank-you note. (Some people believe this is "brown-nose" but it is actually good manners.)
Arrive at your interview location early. Freshen your makeup (just a litle powder and lipstick). You can use cellophane tape to get rid of lint too. I traveled in running shoes and changed to my professional shoes when I reached my destination. If you have extra time, use it to check out the school facilities, boards etc.
Do not eat anything that can spill. Avoid things like pasta, coffee etc. Sip water and eat when the interview is over. Carry a pocket packet of tissues too.
No extreme hairstyles, dangly earrings, garish make-up or perfume. If your interviewer happens to be allergic to your perfume, you might have a poor interview. Have your nails neatly manicured but no nail art. Use a breath mint but no gum (you might forget to dispose of it before your interview). You may also want to wear very, comfortable shoes because most interviews involve a walking tour. If your feet hurt, you may have a very long day.
Finally, give yourself 24 hours before you fly out. You do not want your interview day rushed because your have to catch a flight. Also, sometimes ground transportation can be a problem.
Enjoy yourself and the interview. If you have been invited, you are a potential matriculating student! Congratulations on getting this far.
