Paediatric Interventional Cardiology?

HI ,
is it possible to do peadiatric cardiology and then specialise in peadiatric interventional cardiology or is that just an option for people who did their IM and then Cardio?
really appreciate any info..

do u mean that after 3 yrs in paeds and 3 in paediatric cardiology u do a further specialization that qualifies u to perform interventional procedures??
didnt really follow that.. whats cath ?

That's right.

3 years peds residency
3 years peds cardiology ( during which time you will do some months in the cath lab )
additional time ( I think 1 year is right ) of cath fellowship.

Remember, interventional cardiology in children and infants is a very uncommon procedure.

there are also interventional electrophysiologists, which do things like ablation of accessory conduction pathways, etc.

either way, you cannot just to an adult cardiology fellowship and then take a course in peds interventional.
Kiddie and adult hearts are nothing similar.

i was just checking out a website on paediatric caradiology and it said most septal defect and shunts will possibly be corrected nonsurgically in the future...
so these would probably be covered by paed cardiologists right...
but as u mentioned this must be very uncommon now. is that why the pay for paed cardiologist is much lower than interventional cardiologists?

I really don't know the salaries for red peds cardiologist vs interventional.

I can tell you that I saw what the new faculty were being offered in teh dept of peds cardiology ( at the place where I did my fellowship ) and it was rediculously low ( but academic medicine often pays a fraction of what you can make in private practice )

In a big city, you just don't need that many peds cardiologist s in private practice, so most jobs are in teh academic setting.
Just something else to consider prior to starting.

and yes, many defects can be repaired nonsurgically, such as many ASD's and PDA's in older children.
Also valvuloplasty...like dilation of pulmonary valvular stenosis
