What does the practice of a psychiatrist who has sub-specialized in pain management look like? I've seen anesthesiologist pain management docs and familiar with the procedures they do - can psychiatrists who have done a pain fellowship do these two, or is their practice more based on therapy?

There are a psychiatrist or two on SDN who have done pain management fellowships. I think one of them is JettaVR (or something close to that). If you search around you should be able to find some of their posts.

psychiatrists who have an interest in treating pain are mostly going to focus on therapy when doing this. There is one psychiatrist who occasionally posts that did a pain fellowship and does procedures, and I'm sure there are a handful of others across the country....but this is not typical. If you want to practice interventional pain medicine and are a psych resident, I'd recommend switching(or trying to start) a pm&r residency and then apply to pain from there.
