Hello!!! I took parasitology class as an undergrad and loved it. I was wondering if anyone on here knows anything about specializing in parasitology after vet school? My sister is in vet school and her parasitology professor did 2 years residency after DVM and worked in a lab.... this sounds like something up my alley. Thoughts or advice??

My master's research focused on parasitology!! I love it. I would definitely make connections with the parasitology professors right away and start working with them during summers, or during semesters if you can handle that. That way you have a foot in the door when you graduate and want to do a residency or internship. Also, get into a parasit research lab as an undergrad so you can make sure that is really for you. There are so many aspects and so many different things to do but it can be a really tough subject to research. A lot of the work is done on either very well known specimens or worms that have been collected only once or twice. It is a lot of fun if you like a challenge 🙂

@Lissarae06 Would have some decent information if she isn't too busy right now.
Sure. I am still regretting not going for a residency right out of school and I keep going back and forth on whether to apply for funding this year. I am expecting a really good raise at work so I keep hesitating. At least parasit is one of the better paid residencies. Anyway anyone interested in Parasitology should check out http://ncvetp.org. It has the info on residencies as well as some fun parasit stuff to check out. Parasitology is a very competitive residency due to how few positions there are. Most residents take 4 years or so to complete the residency. You earn your PhD and have to pass boards. They will also expect you to publish and present during this time. The residents at Oklahoma State also had some teaching duties-especially in lab classes for 1st and 2nd years. My fourth year I did one of my preceptors in the parasit lab. It was probably my favorite rotation and I got a publication out of it (second author but still). Feel free to ask if you have any specific questions. Tag me so I see it or PM me 🙂
