Question for UoP students:

Is having a car very advantageous? I am debating whether or not to sell mine. I will be living at Pacific Apartments, but I won't find out about parking until June. If I get parking at Pacific Apartments, it would be about $140 per month. According to UoP literature, if I don't get Pacific Apartments parking, I might be stuck with $250 per month parking at a building nearby. Even at $140 per month, I'm not sure of the utility of having a car in San Francisco. Is having a car worth the cost? What percentage of UoP students have a car?

Thanks!

I'd recommend you against having a car in SF, especially if you are concerned with the financial side of it; Most apartments, and even student housing will charge you about $200 per month for a parking space. Parking in San Francisco is not easy, and it's pretty expensive too. I can't speak for UoP students, but I've never seen students driving to school on a regular basis.
Public transportation is pretty good in SF, and I don't think you should have any problem without a car if you're just going to be a student at UoP.

Moreover I find driving in SF, tries the last ounce of my patience.

How does the $70 a year work!? Why isn't everyone doing that?

You go down to the SFMTA building on Van Ness, wait for an obscene amount of time, then buy a street parking permit for whatever zone you want (Pacific Heights is G).

You have to move your car for street cleaning but other than that...

armor, can you can take a guess at what % of UoP students have cars in SF? Just trying to get a sense of the usefulness of it versus the hassle. Thanks!

I really have no idea. Hassle has been minimal for me, and having lived without a car for first year, it's been much easier with than without. However, I have what is more or less a disposable car so the dings, dents and scratches that come with street parking don't really bother me.
