I was just wondering if anyone knows why Parkland and LSU Oral Surgery programs have such a strong presence at their respective hospitals and so many other OMS programs do not. Anyone???

I don't know... I think there are quite a few OMFS programs that are very well known at their hospitals (because these "bad-boy (and girl) dentists" rock the facial trauma world).

The answer probably can be summarized
1) How old and diverse the programs are
2) The Attending Surgeons (well known in academia/literature)

At UCLA, oral and maxillofacial surgery is part of the division of dentistry rather than the division of surgery. This instantly creates a separation. Plus, when you have powerful plastic surgeons in the hospital they will eclipse an oral surgery program, especially when it is in LA. Medical care is well divided into specialties in LA. Overlapping scope of practice is not as acceptable as in other parts of the country. Not sure why. It seems like in LA, PRS is automatically considered to be the pinnacle of surgical skill.

Funny..... At parkland, it's pretty common knowledge that PRS is pretty inferior in terms of facial trauma when compared to OMFS or ENT.
