So guys, I'm a premed major right now, and I'm looking for some advice on my future specialty. I am planning on matching into orthopedic surgery, but i had some questions regarding work hours.

It has always been my dream to be a police officer too, so id like to do each of them part time. I was wondering to what extent i could be a part time orthopedic surgeon. Like, could I do orthopedics like 20 hours a week and then do police stuff the other 20 hours, or would the minimum for ortho be like 30 lol?

btw, I know residency is an exception, and i would obvs have to work the full 40 or 50 hours in ortho during that year(s).

40-50 hours a week is part time in medicine
But police officer and surgeon? In this social climate, you're basically begging for reporters to come after you

You should also consider that if you hurt your hands fighting with someone in the street your surgical career could be over.

Ortho residency = 80 hours of work per week. Every week. For at least five years.

Ortho job= 50+hours per week. Could you find a job that was flexible or where you cover certain shifts/weeks of call. Maybe. Theoretically anything is possible as an attending. Practically, it would be unlikely.

EM or even IM are more shift-work friendly and could allow you to do something else part time for "fun"

But serious question... is it possible to work part-time? Say, 40 hours / week, and take a corresponding pay cut. In this orthopedics scenario, you're most likely still making $200k pre-tax (I divided 400k in half there). It seems like a pretty good gig.

The problem is that the relationship between pay and time isn't strictly linear til you meet overhead. When youre hired, the group invests in you to a certain extent: they pay for malpractice insurance, nursing/support staff, etc. Those costs are somewhat fixed.

If you aren't working as much, the profit/fixed cost ratio is lower for you. Why hire you when someone else makes them more money? It's also likely that other group members have more call/hours/misery in this scenario, since you have fewer hours. Also, if your hours are low enough, you probably won't be a fantastic surgeon.

In specialties where this is possible (em) part timers make less per hour for the same reasons as above.

Yeah, at least go into trauma surgery so after you spray the wrong person with bullets, you can stitch them back together.

He'll generate his own business.

I submit fighter pilot will add more cachet

Why stop there? Become a firefighter as well and you will be the ultimate catch.

I've had a really tough day, and I needed a good laugh. For that, I thank you. Why not reach for the stars and throw part-time astronaut and president into the fray as well?

The above poster, dababaBatman or whoever, answered your question perfectly, OP.

This probably could have been a legit poster; then again, it may have been a troll.

Either way, making fun of this guy like that isn't the adult thing to do. I don't even know why there's so much condescension and negativity going around on here.

Honestly betting OP is real. I was pretty jaded and out of it as a freshman undergrad.
