Any thoughts of part time private practice options. I am looking into some options and will soon be working less days in the hospital.
I have few offers and Im trying to decide between them. One is an estabilished group practice where they take a bigger cut but they do everything for you credentialing, referrals, billing, secretary and has support staff of SW, psychologist, etc. The other one takes less of a cute but doesn't have secretary and has a biller part-time. Another options is a previous mentor I had who spends most his time in the inpatient and teaching now and barely uses his office except for 2 to 3 times a month and offered for the space for a very reduced fee, except I would do most of the leg work.. Anyone who did part time and wished they chose a different setting?

Determine your goals, conveniences, priorities, etc and you should get your answer.

Are you older? Do you have more time to let this build? Are you looking for more of an income boost now? Is this more to explore a different setting? What sort of patient populations do you want to work with? Does your inpatient work lead you to somewhat of a client referral source?

If you do part time PP, I recommend you get a main job that'll still allow you to get benefits. If you do 100% private practice you are in charge of your own benefits, what the PP can offer you as a benefit (which is likely very small if anything), or lack thereof.

When I used to work for the state, that was a perfect melding place for PP. You still got benefits with the state, you didn't have to work full-time, in fact you could've worked as little as 20 hours a week for the state and still get full-time benefits.

yes good point.. I am just out of fellowship one year.. mainly work with adults. I have another job that is contract work that is really good pay, they won't give benefits unless I do full time of course less pay. But maybe Ill check the state and VA jobs now.

Are you going to take insurance or not. A larger group offers the benefits or better contracts and usually the larger percentage is only early on. You would become partner eventually. You can always hire your own secretary, not a huge part time expense.

Good point, yes the large group takes certain insurance and of course there is a noncompete. I guess a secretary and biller wouldn't be that bad as well.
