A question to all the practicing rad oncs out there:
Are there any of you who work part time, say 25% up to 50% clinical? And not necessarily the rest of the time in research, at least not specifically rad onc research. Does anyone practice part time and spend the rest of the time more generally? Either in industry, public health, biotech, government, board of directors, investor, something that is not necessarily exclusive to radiation oncology. How frequent is this? Can you give specific examples of people who are doing this?

Yes it's possible and a few people do it. Mostly, it's done for family reasons like rearing young children. These jobs are hard to come by, but I see a few listed in the ASTRO job directory each year.

Actually, I don't think they are very hard to come by. I had several friends elect for this option (all women with young kids and physician husbands). All had jobs very early in the process. Part time Rad Onc usually involves being a clinic work horse for a practice 3 days/week or so. You get a base salary (decent but in the 100s generally) with no partnership track. It can be a great thing for a practice - cheap labor - and the doctor, working but without all the responsibility of most rad oncs.

Now finding a practice that will let you be part time and a partner is a much more challenging task.

Anyone who has one of these jobs care to comment?

My impression is it is harder to find a regular job in rad onc than other fields, much less a part time job that offers this kind of flexibility. Lots of internists, even surgeons and medical oncologists who work outside oncology and even medicine, but are there any similar rad oncs?

Here are a couple of part-time listings I found after a cursory glance at the ASTRO career center:

Part-Time Radiation Oncologist
Oncure Medical Corp. - US - CA - Fountain Valley
Part-time Radiation Oncologist needed to join an existing group of physicians in the Orange County, CA area. Potential for position to go full-time or stay part-time...

Part time Radiation Oncologist
Touro Infirmary - US - LA - New Orleans
BC/BE Part time Radiation Oncologist wanted to join senior Radiation Oncologist in busy practice in uptown New Orleans. Practice has a Trilogy Linac with OBI, SRS and SBRT with Brainlab, Nucletron HDR...

I imagine these part time positions are parents with young children. But are there any rad oncs who are working in other areas? As an example, there are a number of internists and surgeons who do health IT or policy but I don't know or hear of any rad oncs doing the same.
