Partially funded MD/PhD

I've heard that there are some partially funded MD/PhD programs where 2 out of 4 years of tuition is waived. I would like to learn why people choose to attend partially funded programs vs. a cheaper medicals school and then do research during fellowship/post doc? At least one would get paid during fellowship or post-doc right? Which are the partially funded programs?

The partially funded programs still provide a stipend during the PhD years (just like any other PhD program), so I don't think that there would be any advantage to attending a cheaper medical school and doing a post-doc/fellowship later on (that is, if one really wants to end up in research). My guess as to why someone would enroll in a partially funded MD/PhD is that it was the only program they got into or some prestige factor (Hopkins and Harvard both offer partially funded spots)
