How detrimental is below average clerkship grades (mostly passes) affect on one's ability to match in Anesthesia if I apply broadly. I have honors in first and second year and a good step I (>250). Should I have a backup plan in case I don't match? Or is the possibility of not-matching so remote that I don't need to worry about it?

Anesthesia is not very competitive as long as you're above average. Maybe the best of the best programs will have concerns, but you shouldn't have a problem matching somewhere strong. Why would you think otherwise?
P.S. A downward grade trend is not good. Turn it around lazy bones.

It all depends on your list, so of course you have worse shot of matching if your list includes MGH, Hopkins, UCSF etc...

if you apply broadly, no worries my friend

there's a good thread in the archive somewhere where someone asked if a pass meant they wouldn't match well followed by a string of people with passes who matched well.

how's your class rank? most schools will send a distribution of grades of your class along with your transcript, so it'll make a big difference if 5% of your class got passes vs 50%.

To followup on the original question. How many programs would constitute applying "broadly." Is 30 risking not matching?
