I had patellar realignment surgery on my right knee about ten years ago, and I have stiffness and inflammation after walking for more than 20 minutes. Will wearing a brace to reduce the symptoms or should I try a surgical solution? Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

No way to know, given that. I would think that it is certainly logical to try PT, a brace, acupuncture, prayer, anything before going under the knife again.

While it is sometimes a necessary evil, the root of all complications is often the repair of previous complications.

Well some things need to be known. What type of surgery did you have, there are several possibilities. Secondly what is your age now, you could just have some inflammation from early degenerative changes and not the result of the surgery. YOu should go see your orthopaedic surgeon, or sports medicine practitioner and be evaluated. You atleast need some x-rays to evaluate your knee, and someone to look at the mechanics of your knee to tell you what would be best for you. In the mean time, use some NSAIDs, and do a lot of isometric quad exercises.

I had an MRI about a year ago while under the care of an orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine doctor. They both concluded that I was in the early stages of arthritis. I am 29 now, but I will try Naprosyn and the exercises and see what happens. It's funny because I had the surgery when I was 19 and I remember the surgeon saying that I would most likely need a knee replacement when I was 50 or 60 yrs old. He also said that I would probably always have trouble with my knee since the knee joint wasn't tracking correctly. It seems my VMO is under developed and that causes the joint to pull to one side and not track correctly. Really, after ten years I am starting to think it is hopeless. Thanks a lot for the info. Any further suggestions would be great. Take care and GOD bless.
