OK, here's another one:

I have 3 US patents (and 2 US and 1 UK patent pending in late stages of being awarded.) None are medically related. I'm not sure how to classify these for my application. Are they representative of research experience? Work experience? Honors?

Any ideas?

P.S. Does work experience at an R&D type job count as research experience, or is research experience pretty much strictly for academic-type research.

I am an IP attorney and would suggest that you mention it under your work experience and as a separate line item (include all them in one heading) as research.

That would be considered time that you spent other than just studying so I think it would definately help

I would definitely list it - it's something unique and it is a testament to your abilities and creativity. I think you could list it under 'work' or 'awards' or 'other.' Just look at all of your ECs and see what you have already - If you have 4 work experiences and no awards, then list under awards. If you have a bunch of work and awards, then use somethings else. Put the patents (which really don't fit into any of these categories) into the one that'll make you look the most balanced. And list them all together - don't waste space by splitting them up.
