Does anyone know anything about civilians wanting to do military fellowships in pathology??? I was just wondering whether it was easy or not.

I checked online and the only thing that I got was the AFIP talking about military residents just go ahead and applying to it, but gave no address or contact info.

Inquiry minds want to know! Thanks folks.

I just checked online --> The following two fellowships are the current ACGME accredited pathology fellowships at the AFIP:

1) Pulmonary Pathology Fellowship
Teri J. Franks, MD (202)782-1780 (202)782-5017

http://www.afip.org/Departments/Pulmonary/index.html

2) Neuropathology Fellowship
Elizabeth J. Rushing, MD (202)782-1620 (202)782-4099

***They also have Callendar-Binford fellowships in in one or more of the subspecialty areas of anatomic pathology including: cellular, chemical, forensic, oral and veterinary pathology

NE Ohio Penguin --> your SDN status is listed as Dental Student. I believe that the Callendar-Binford fellowships are the only ones that are open to dentists

AFIP voluntarily dropped ACGME accreditation for everything except forensics in the wake of the BRAC (including oral pathology - if that's what you're interested in). There are no fellows there this year (that I'm aware of - except under the forensic branch (and maybe the 2nd year neuro fellow) - since it is being taken out from under the AFIP and given its own command and has a viable future).

In the past, they did train some civilian fellows there, primarily in the non-boarded surgical subspecialities. They have also trained a couple of civilians (that I know of) in a few board subspecialties (hemepath).

Bottom line: military pathology is in a huge state of flux currently with the uncertain future of the AFIP. I expect some new organization to rise from the ashes in the distant future, but in the meantime even the military is training all of our fellows in the civilian world. 👎
