I've gathered from reading this informative forum that many pathology residency programs are not as competitive in the selection process as other medical specialties. How does this affect applying/interviewing for path PGY1? Do 4th years going into path tend to apply to or interview at fewer programs because they don't need to "play the odds" as much? I'm interested in hearing about your personal experiences and thoughts. Thanks.

It really depends on the programs you are interested in attending. Though path overall is not as competitive as many specialties, certain programs are very competitive.

It also depends on how you look as an applicant. Good grades, high scores on USMLE, etc... then you don't need as many.

If you are interested in the big named places (ie. Stanford, Mass General, etc....) then put in a couple backups as well.

If you have bad stats, then make sure you have alot of backups.

Most of the applicants I have met went on around 8-10 interviews. This may have been overkill for some of them, but better to have a spot on match day than not just because you didn't want to go on many interviews.

I personally only went on 4 interviews. I knew I wanted to stay at my med school for residency and I knew they were planning on ranking me high. So the other places were just to see what else was around and have a couple backups just by chance they were not telling me the truth.

I interviewed at 9 programs out of 16 that I applied to. I ranked 3. Path is not as competitive as other fields but I think applications are on the rise.

I have written some information about interviewing, etc on my blog . Go to Information for the Pathology Residency Candidate

Hey BCMD, nice blog.

I am with you on the Differential Diagnosis book, I love it. It has been right beside me all during surg path.

BCMD--

What a wonderful source of information! Thanks!

No problem, glad you guys like it. I started the weblog because I really didn't feel I had a good source of information on pathology when I applied and thus, I wanted to help out others who are thinking of going into path.

BCMD -- Fantastic resource! I'm definately bookmarking it for future reference.
