Hey.
One of our fellow residents didn't pass step 3, so according to NJ law, he can't go on to the third year.
Does anyone know of any unfilled spots/openings in any Pathology residency programs in the NY/CT/PA area?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

He has already been given the "letter" from the GME saying that his contract won't be renewed, cuz he didn't pass by May 30.
So, either he's out of a job, or he goes to a different state where ur allowed to go on to 3rd yr w/out step 3.

Click. Note to self. Take Step-3 sooner than later. Click.

Is this just bad planning on the resident's part? You figure he/she would know that they would need to pass the exam by 3rd year. How many times a year are you allowed to take the USMLE? I'm a DO, so I took the COMLEX. It was only offered twice a year when I took it.

On a more positive note, I guess you just advertised an opening at your program for a 3rd year...

No, i think he planned the best he could. He just didn't pass.

would the gme office give this resident the option of taking a sabbatical year to study for and pass step 3, then resume his/her training in AY 2009/2010?

The only reason I mention that is because something similar happened to a resident in my program. He knew he had to pass it, but he kept putting off taking it because he wasn't ready. He took time off to study & chose not to take the exam directly afterward. Therefore, I felt there was some poor planning on his part. The resident was booted out of the program, & no one has heard from him since. I get the feeling he was kind of an embarrassment to the program, considering he was a US MD grad.

Sad!! Our program would have figured something out to keep the person on. I'll have to keep that in mind when I am tempted to b***h about things here.

On a lighter note tell that resident that didn't pass step 3 that I know of a similar situation that happened to a resident in PA.... she had to leave.... went to MGH and later did a dermpath fellowship and is now very successful... so keep the faith. Step 3 is a bunch of BS anyway. On a somber note... I don't know of any open slots in those states...sorry.

also I believe PA has the same law....
