Although Ive never witnessed it first hand, Ive heard at many programs that upper level residents will sometimes help interns gross for a bit of a donation (I would say offer like 40 bucks/hour?) when you are on a tough surg path rotation. That way you can get more time to prep your cases, read and act all smart for that dermpath LOR.

If you are well off (I was West KY trailer park often eating churros that fell of the little mexican's dude cart), it might be something to consider.

Damn yo, I been doing apartment hunting and talking to realtors in Boston and all I can say is that the rental market there is gonna totally ass-rape me. I dunno if I can spare $40/hr; I think I'll have better chances of ****ting in a swinging bucket.

Thought they had churros at the galleria next to Boston Childrens...maybe Im getting this confused with my childhood in East LA....

I have yet to see $$$ change hands in regards to grossing specimens in. There are some who seem to occasionally get others to do some of their work for them by acting all sad and depressed. But most people don't fall for this. Fortunately for me, the PA who is normally the one in the main grossing room is on maternity leave, so the fill in PA who normally does skins and small bits upstairs has come down and she is unbelievable. She basically works non stop all morning, maybe a 10 minute break, and does almost everything that comes in except for the really huge and complicated stuff (like osteosarcoma or total face-ectomy). This is in contrast to the previous PA who takes the little jars of tonsils and heart valves and maybe a submandibular gland or an inguinal node dissection and goes to her little station and takes 4 hours to do what she could do in 30 minutes. Because she is always going on break or yapping. I think we all may protest when she tries to come back from maternity leave.

Well, I don't know technically, but the replacement does gross the whole time and it is pretty impressive. She doesn't even leave the objectionable specimens.

And yes, tissue procurement is where it's at. She now comes to me first for help on procuring tissue. It's a sign.

Tissue procurement is the group that takes a piece or pieces of the specimen for research purposes prior to going for gross and microscopic analysis. The part about the money is just a joke, but there are apparently some hotties in tissue procurement at certain programs. They even offer gum to residents with favorable phenotypes, or so I'm told.

Oh yeah, due to the high cost of living in Boston, that's actually closer to $80/hr.
