Any pathologists out there who work for this company or have had any interactions with them and would be willing to share their thoughts? I'm considering a position with them after I finish fellowship, but don't want to work for a group with the same stigma as LabCorp or Ameripath. The job is at a community hospital doing all the day to day things a private group would be doing. Feel free to PM me if you'd rather not post publicly as well. Thanks in advance!

The “stigma” of Ameripath? This, from a trainee with ZERO experience.
ROFLMAO! I know at least a dozen current or former Ameripath pathologists with at least 25 years experience who’s skills, reputation and success (professional and financial) you could only hope to emulate in your most optimistic dreams. I’m one of them. As a matter of fact, I was on board before it even had the name “Ameripath”. I helped pick the name before it was a public company. Of course this was way, way back in 1996 when the only “stigma” YOU had to worry about was what the other children on the playground thought about you. Any more concerns about Ameripath “kid”?

I apologize, I've clearly hit a nerve and it wasn't my intention to insult anyone. I had never actually heard of this group before and am just trying to get more information. The "stigma" is just something I've heard and seen from my mentors in academics, who seemed very uncomfortable with the idea of me being an employee and not a partner (during these conversations, it did occur to me that these mentors in academics are employees themselves). But I understand the concern - do I want to be in a position where someone else in the organization is making more money if I'm working harder? In your experience, how much room for growth in salary was there for an "employed" pathologist over time? It's difficult to compare that sort of opportunity with a typical PP, where there's a defined jump in salary at a certain point.

And, for those of you who have not given it much thought, where the hell do you think “Ameripath “ came from? They bought what are/were considered
“pillar”, long established private practices in selected geographic areas that led the competition in each specific locale. When they amassed enough practices, a name was picked and an IPO followed. They later went private with venture cap folks Welsh, Carson, Anderson and Stowe and allowed us all to buy MORE stock. They “incubated” it and several more years Quest bought it (and the stock of course).

So, as you can see, it came about as a result of a conglomeration of a bunch of loser, marginally employable pathologists who were desperate to become
employees. And they were all img’s (except me).

I would LOVE to hear what LADoc has to say about my history lesson and my little screed.

That was then this is now Mike.

Ladies/gentlemen, I agree with you completely. That WAS then and, sadly, it ain’t the same. My finger was in the pie “back when”, right or wrong?- - and for whom?

I noticed this a few years ago. Our derms are being bought out quickly and the specimens are being routed to a large lab in the midwest. Don't plan on doing much derm work. It is a dirty business.
