Why is the symbol of the ABP a TURD?? Seriously what does that say about pathology?! I assumed my AP/CP certificate would have this fecal sculpture on it so I never intended to frame it. But, Im here to say that yes, your cert (should you pass) does not have the dreaded turd ABP logo.

Why is the symbol of the ABP a TURD??

The American Board of Pathology (ABP) logo is based on a bronze plaque designed in 1954 by John R. Schenken, M.D., trustee of the ABP from 1951 to 1963. The background is a reproduction of the Mycenaean coils of intestine, thought to be the first representation of visceral pathology. This sculptured votive offering, made approximately 600 B.C., was excavated by Schliemann in 1876 from the ruins of the extinct city of Mycenae, Greece. The superimposed syringe-like cylinder represents Hooke’s microscope of 1666 A.D., the first compound microscope to be accurately illustrated. The
snake coiled about the barrel of the microscope depicts the sacred Aesculapian serpent which, by shedding its skin, is a sign of renewal—the symbol of medicine. Collectively, this logo represents medicin resting firmly upon the foundation of pathology.

HUH?! Dude, think about, why are turds shaped the way they are??? Because they sculpted by the "Mycenean coils" of the bowel. What the hell else is a turd but a negative image of the bowels pinched at one end?

The problem is putting the fact the symbol is a class A uber dump doesnt sound as interesting on the ABP website. But the true tale is Virchow the father of modern pathology was so constipated by sitting at the scope for so long making his initial observations, that when he finally arose, he laid this gem, which was then bronzed by his students and remains in the Medical Museum in Vienna, Austria to this day. The founders of the ABP realizing they were also producing a seductively aromatic "gem" decided to put Virchow's dump on the logo. A reminder to all, that boards are merely a "pump and dump" exercise in memorizing minutae.

I am prosposing a new slogan for the ABP:

The American Board of Pathology. Home of Virchow's bronzed dump.

That would be pretty impressive on a letter head, no?

Maybe they could put the bronzed dump on a pillow and show it to the folks about to take the AP/CP in Tampa, you know, as inspiration.

I guarantee that some people there would try to touch it.

For those that have visited the epic office building/hotel combo that the ABP occupies in Tampa, you know the corruption and sheer malice they are capable of. I propose someone shortly after taking the CP portion, drop a fatty dump in the hall way. Be sure it has food chunks from your lunch at the legendary Panera near there.

Ah, memories. I have indeed wandered that mall, eating at that crappy food court amist happy children and worry-free shoppers, and asked myself why I was doing this. Very depressing. Do this day, I refuse to go to Tampa for a meeting or vacation.

I second the call for the dropping of a huge dump, right outside of the exam room, following the CP test. It would at least be a bold statement against the corruption and sheer malice of the ABP (very well said, btw).
