i really really really don't like the microscopy/slides portion of pathology. i can memorize epithelia, etc. but identifying stages of cells (ie: the stages of maturation of a neutrophil), or identifying abnormalities in a slide, is not my cup of tea. do any of u guys know how much, if any, of step 1 has path slides on it?

Well its easy give away's...you could just read the stem of the question and look at the pictures to figure out what you are dealing with!! Start with basics if you have difficulty recognizing histological slides..here's a link for ya

but don't ignore key pathological findings..on boards it can really make your life easier. Keep examining every possible slide you come across until it becomes second nature...good luck!

I'd roughly say about 10% of the questions on my test had some kind of visual, and of those, maybe half really required you to know the picture to answer the question. In the other half, knowing the picture helped, but you could make a reasonable guess based solely on the text.

I wouldn't go nuts with pictures; know what's in the Robbin's Question book and what's in Goljan and you will be in great shape. Goljan does a great job of guiding you to some of the classic pictures you need to know. The chronically ambitious could pursue Robin's Atlas of Path, which actually is pretty useful for the high-yield captions on the pictures. Trying to memorize all the pictures in the Atlas is overkill and low-yield.
